I have not observed Calico Pennants (Celithemis elisa) in Olmsted County, but they have been recorded in Goodhue and Steele counties, which are adjacent to Olmsted county.
However, they are plentiful in northern Minnesota, where the photographs below were taken. They are very colorful insects with prominent wing markings and heart-shaped patterns on the dorsal aspects of their abdomen. These patterns are red in males and yellow in females and immature males.
Calico pennants cling to plant stems, giving the appearance of pennants in the wind, accounting for their designation. They are approximately 3 cm in length.
